Arc Lamp

Digital fabrication has become essential nowadays because it enables precise, customisable, and efficient production, bridging the gap between digital design and tangible goods. Manufacturing efficiency boosts creativity, reduces waste, and allows for rapid prototype development.

The main focus of this project was to explore creative ways of digital fabrication through laser-cutting.

"Digital fabrication gives us a new perspective, but the goal is not just to replicate traditional techniques — it’s to extend them." — Greg Lynn

Modernism

Creating the Arc Lamp has taught me the complexities of digital fabrication and has given me a newfound respect for this process. The design captures the spirit of industrial modernism by embracing new technology and aligning with the core principles of functionality, simplicity, and material honesty. Through laser cutting, I was able to transform an otherwise ordinary material into something semi-transparent, flexible, and visually captivating, thanks to the precise repetition of pattern cutouts. The minimalistic forms achieved by laser cutting the lamp naturally resonate with modernism's preference for simplicity. The Arc Lamp’s clean lines and functional beauty echo the modernist ideal of simplicity while preserving elegance and purpose.

The Design

By removing the need for glue, the design is more environmentally friendly, avoiding adhesives and their often harmful ingredients. The flat-pack structure also optimizes storage and shipping, making it more cost-effective for both producers and consumers. This approach not only reduces shipping expenses but also caters to a modern, mobile lifestyle by enabling compact, efficient transportation and lowering the product's overall carbon footprint. Additionally, the use of interlocking clips enhances the design’s aesthetic minimalism, celebrating clean lines and craftsmanship without unnecessary adhesives, and highlighting the thoughtful engineering behind the design.
